Layered in Velvet

How To Wear A Velvet Dress

It’s currently 30 degrees, which feels like a heat wave after the days of negative temperatures we’ve been having. I’ve been looking at beach pictures on Pinterest to pass the time. Unfortunately, this has only made me question why I’m living in Ohio, when I’d much rather be in Naples or Captiva Island (two of my favorite places in Florida). I keep dropping not-so-subtle hints to my boyfriend that I want to take a trip, but I don’t think he’s suffering in the cold as much as I am.

While it’s still too cold to sport anything sleeveless, I’ve been dying to wear this vintage velvet dress! I got it for a whopping $3 my freshman year of college at a thrift store. I bought it for an 80s-themed sorority party, and it’s managed to make it through multiple closet purgings (the ugly red kitten heels I also bought at the thrift store were not so lucky). The fit & flare shape makes it fun and youthful, and not too serious. I had planned on wearing this dress to holiday parties, but my party calendar was barren this season, so it continued to sit in my closet. To give some life to it, I decided to pair it with my Kensie polka dot blouse. The polka dots are velvet, which makes it even more perfect! Some people may think velvet is outdated, but adding fun accessories can breathe new life into your velvet pieces.

PS- My Cincy Chic column this week is all about personal style resolutions. I don’t usually make really serious resolutions, because I tend to forget about them after January. I’m sharing some of the things I want to work on this year regarding my style and closet! I think this will be a lot easier!

I can’t believe you mentioned Naples and Captiva!! We went to both on our week-long trip to Sanibel. We LOVED Captiva – it was so calm and empty when we were there. And Naples was a blast – we also went to Marco Island and did the jet ski tour in the area. It was amazing and I’d love to go back…especially now 🙂

You have no idea how jealous I am you went to my two favorite spots!! Isn’t Captiva amazing? It’s my mom’s favorite place in the world. It’s off the beaten path, the beaches are perfect, and the food is amazing. If you go back, I’m coming with!
